Independence Day – The third of July

Fireworks 1
So another holiday is coming along, and I thought I would write a few things about the up coming independence holiday. I first want to point out that I did not make a mistake when I said the third of july, because one of the biggest independence day events is held in Downtown Columbus known as Red White and Boom, is actually held on the Third of July. this event although glorious, the few times I saw it in person, and entertaining every time I saw it on TV, is a matter of inconvenience for many. This is a celebration for the Declaration of Independence written in 1974, but is never celebrated on the 4th of July. The reasoning they provide is a rather bland one for me.

Red, White & BOOM! is held on July 3 so it does not interfere with any of the Central Ohio communities’ firework displays and events on July 4.

Although, this may seem like a valid reason, it has become so popular that they allow seating to take place on July 2nd. I find it rather hard for a family to spent so much time at the Red White and Boom event and the proceed to another firework show on the fourth, This would essentially mess with anyone’s sleeping schedule. Being able to claim a spot 29 hours before the event starts, and then staying up for the 26 minute show, to then drive home. Sleep, and then get up for another 20 minute showing on the 4th of july, local to your area, seems to me like it would change your body to a night shift schedule, but then you have to work the 5th, unless it happens on a weekend and your company isn’t open, but if your like mine, you have to work the 4th and weekends so there is no mercy given if you want to participate in these events.

Independence Day
a civil holiday for the celebration of the anniversary of the beginnings of national independence; specifically July 4 observed as a legal holiday in the United States in commemoration of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776

So Why do we use fireworks to celebration Independence Day, but we make other holidays like Thanksgiving celebrate with food. Even Christmas is celebrated with a Tree and food. The answer is in history, according to Forrest Wickman, a writer for The Slate Group

Because John Adams wanted us to. Before the Declaration of Independence was even signed, he envisioned fireworks as a part of the festivities. In a letter to Abigail Adams on July 3, 1776, he wrote that the occasion should be commemorated “with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” The first commemorative Independence Day fireworks were set off on July 4, 1777.

The reality of the mater is that I still don’t accept the reasoning of holding these firework shows before the actual date of declaring independence. The Red, White & Boom event also doesn’t just include the fireworks show, there is live entertainment, and multiple activities planned through the afternoon. Downtown Columbus is basically a party for July 3rd, but even the first fireworks were done on the 4th. Companies still only close on the 4th, so not everyone can enjoy these festivities on the 3rd, so by not interrupt local activities, your not allowing everyone to participate because business has to run as usual on the 3rd. I hope those that are lucky enough to get the 3rd and 4th off enjoy their independence celebrations, and for the rest of you, join me as we work July 4th.

Personality – The Meaning Behind Words

Ever been in a situation where words that are spoken are unclear, perhaps you heard them, but the words used have definitive meanings. What about the words that have multiple meanings, how can anyone be sure of the words spoken, when the words used have multiple meanings. You may say tone, which itself has multiple meanings, I rather say personality.

the quality or state of being a person
the condition or fact of relating to a particular person; specifically : the condition of referring directly to or being aimed disparagingly or hostilely at an individual
the complex of characteristics that distinguishes an individual or a nation or group; especially : the totality of an individual’s behavioral and emotional characteristics
distinction or excellence of personal and social traits; also : a person having such quality
vocal or musical sound of a specific quality; especially : musical sound with respect to timbre and manner of expression
a sound of definite pitch and vibration
accent or inflection expressive of a mood or emotion
the pitch of a word often used to express differences of meaning
a particular pitch or change of pitch constituting an element in the intonation of a phrase or sentence
style or manner of expression in speaking or writing
(1) : color quality or value (2) : a tint or shade of color
the effect in painting of light and shade together with color
the state of a living body or of any of its organs or parts in which the functions are healthy and performed with due vigor
healthy elasticity : resiliency

Both terms are rather expansive, but in terms of personality, I like how Merriam Webster shortened it to a simple phrase, “the set of emotional qualities, ways of behaving, etc., that makes a person different from other people.” Looking over the definitions for Tone, you can see how much it relates to either music, health, or attitude. This simplification is what I am utilizing in this post. Primarily since we are referring to attitude, speaking and even writing forms, we would be focusing on the 3rd and 6th definition.

I am always told I have hidden, or double messages when I talk about either my problems, my feelings, or just general every day tasks. This may be true because my personality is to avoid conflict, so would say something that doesn’t cause an argument.

Double Meaning
noun: a word or phrase that is open to more than one interpretation.
Hidden Message
information that is not immediately noticeable, and that must be discovered or uncovered and interpreted before it can be known.

I take pride in my causal use of avoidance, because it keeps people in a slightly better mood around me, although if people start learning my personality, eventually they will be able to interpret my messages, and the result would then be happiness for me, and those around.

Personality is the door to a persons inner most thoughts, it allows messages to be expressed in numerous ways. the door can be cracked, to let out a little expression, or it could be wide open, revealing all emotion contained inside. The ability to open or see inside can be impacted by anyone’s relationship, good or bad, the door is almost always open to some degree. I will never say that the door is shut, because I have never come across a person who can completely hide emotions. I wont doubt it either, there is always a sign that emotion is felt.

Those of you that used the word tone, may have been referring to this emotion that is seen, however, some people, and I consider myself one of these people, have the ability to suppress these emotions to make it difficult to give a meaning to the words being said. I have also been told that my statements that do have a clear definition, have been interpreted as double messages, So I believe that the key to interpreting double messages, or finding hidden messages, would be to know or at least have an idea of about a persons personality.

This knowledge has the power to guide and assist anyone, once you know a persons personality, you will know what they can do, want to do, and how you can help them, either by deciphering messages, or adding to the cryptography of the message. Only those closest to you will ever know what is meant when words come from your mouth.

Personality is constructed, so no one has the same exact personality, there may be similar traits, and core values, but there is always a difference. it may only be one trait, but that trait can easily change a person. How well do you know personality, do you have friends you can read without a problem, maybe you had that moment of confusion with double messages, what ever the case maybe, it goes back to personality.

Procrastination – A Requirement of Life

I am hoping to be more activate and getting more topics done, as a result I have this wonderful topic of procrastination I want to cover. Although it may not be evident, I view it as a requirement in life, everyone procrastinates, whether they agree with me or not.

noun. the act or habit of procrastinating, or putting off or delaying, especially something requiring immediate attention:
verb. to defer action; delay:
verb. to put off till another day or time; defer; delay.

Look ma, I did it again, I love making use of definitions they clear up a lot of opinion based terminology. Although this are definitions, I still like how wikipedia phrased its definition.

Procrastination is the practice of carrying out less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable things in place of less pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the “last minute” before a deadline.

So procrastination is another way we define priorities in our lives, I admit I put off school work, I admit I put off doing topics, but why do we as humans need to procrastinate you ask. Does human desire really have that much control over our lives? In terms of survival, all these tasks I procrastinate on may be the same priority, but if you look at pleasure, maybe I have more fun playing games, then doing school work, maybe I dont think I have the right mindset to post, thinking is work, work is thinking, why cant thinking be pleasurable. Pleasure goes beyond this topic, but can be expanded and explained in more detail, but for the sake of this post, pleasure is fun, fun, aside from a potential dictionary loop, is what makes us happy to continue doing tasks.

Great so procrastination is the result of needing pleasure and happiness. The requirement of life goes back to Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. As each level is satisfied we move to the next, procrastination, assuming our basic needs of survival are taken care successfully puts us at level 3, in this case the Social Level. The desire to be loved, and socialize with the public, through these posts,  even school work would fit here as it is socialization with other people. Masloq's Pryamid As I said these tasks all have a similar priority but a need to procrastinate them for more desirable aspects such as game playing, may result in an achievement which would satisfy a few things at level for for esteem, making us happier and feel more obligated to do those procrastinated tasks. For example, although I procrastinated some of my school, I am happier now, and feel more motivated to finish the school work, so I can get my degree, which then satisfies some of my level 4 (esteem) needs. Utilizing this theory, I can safely say that procrastination may be a requirement of life to determine which tasks have that satisfying esteem qualification. This also puts a slight dent on Maslow’s theory that social has to be completed before we move to esteem, as procrastination allows us to accomplish both level 3 and level 4 needs at the same time. I do agree procrastination has the biggest impact at level 3, simply because when are focus is on survival, such as eating and determining are safety in our own home, generally they will always have a higher priority. Although procrastination has an impact every time priorities are similar as we still may put food off for a drink of water, or we may feel a need to put plastic on windows before we turn on the heat.

So I ask you, can you truly stop procrastination? Although my room mates and myself have had multiple conferences on this issue, however the problem continues and although we come up with ideas how how to solve it, there is always some weird thing in nature that makes it continue. If you have actually stopped procrastination, I would love to hear about it, however if you agree with me that for some reason or another it is required, post your thoughts below as well, maybe we can make this theory a fact.

Minecraft – Vanilla or Modded?

We recently launched a server last week, and although it is based on the Yogscast Complete Pack, this does make it a modded server. The question then came to my head regarding the reason I choose this pack, or any pack at all. My answer always tended to come to the conclusion that it allows flexibility and options. I failed to released that the mere fact that it is using the Yogscast Complete pack I increased the requirements of running minecraft on a computer.

My Goal of this server was to allow the Readers and Authors of Lunatics Landing to connect in a environment of pure creativity, and possibilities. This goal has lead me to helping my roommates setup minecraft on there computers, and in that feat we have run into many technical problems, and my opens were open to how painful it really can be to setup the client to connect to our server. The technical requirements for vanila may be easily met, but the added load from using the mods in the yogscast complete pack, or merely loading them, adds extra stress to the computer. Several of you may be aware of the Vanilla Requirements, and the honest truth is both my room mates both meet the minimum 2 GB of RAM, though they actually have 3Gb, but not the recommended 4Gb. With that in mind I had them try playing vanilla minecraft, and they still experienced a few issues, although a lot less severe, allowing them to actually play the game.

A solution that I can easily come to would be to inform all of you that at the moment since I am running a modded server, that you check the system requirements and follow the recommended requirements before attempting to connect to the server, this would alievate some of the more severe lag from loading up the word. My computer may have 8GB of RAM installed, but Minecraft, when I am on the Lunatics Server, my computer is using roughly 5 or 6 GB of RAM, and it is running smoothly, but keep in mind that to get Java to run more than 3GB of memory, you do need the 64 bit version of Java 7 for the ATL launcher.

The question still remains though, if it is difficult to setup the client to connect to the lunatics landing server, why not just run a vanilla server. The answer in this case would be that remains to be the options modded minecraft offer, increasing the many different creative setups that can be thrown together. The builders wand from extra utilities, to the various machines that product massive quantities of materials, they all assist in creating the best visualization of our thoughts.

Perhaps in the future, when life permits, I may add another server purely vanilla for all the readers that want the minecraft experience, but at the moment, we only have one server setup. If you have any additional questions about the server or the client setup, please comment below, or contact me at

Social Media – What I think about useless updates

Alright, so I had a feeling this post was coming, and although I wont go crazy wild about facebook friends like Foamy the Squirrel does, I will focus the post primarily on the status updates. I will admit I prefer Facebook over Twitter in this aspect because if anyone actually pays attention the faded text that is in the box before you start typing is self-explanatory, for the most part. Facebook says “What’s on your mind?”, while twitter simply says, “What’s happening?”.  And although I have a personal preference toward Facebook simply because I have numerous problems with my twitter account verses my Facebook account, the ideology of them both remains the same. When making status updates, or tweets, your suppose to give updates on whats going on in your life, no big deal right?.

The other day I found this picture that sparked the motivation for this post, although I considered it before, this picture I found made me want to do this post even more. The photo explained that back in the day no one remembers taking a photo of the prepared dinner, developing the film, and then showing your neighbors. I thought it was interesting because Dinner updates, are one of those status that I find most annoying. When you make a meal and take the time to photograph it with your phone, just so you can post it on Facebook and say, yummy or even to say it took you hours to prepare and cook it. I personally get very irritated by these updates because I am sure it takes about five minutes to take a decent picture, without the phone moving, not to mention the plate setting so it actually looks good, and then to type a short phrase about it and publish it on Facebook, I am sure it takes about five minutes. If it took you a couple hours to prepare and you might not want another five minute to publish it on Facebook before you finally eat it. Recipes are another story, because you take to the picture and provide step-by-step directions on how to cook a meal, we have taken a few of them, we tried even more of them, I am not calling recipes stupid, just the dinner updates from people who take pictures of food just to brag to friends about what they had. Its even more annoying when its a common food item like pizza, or burgers, because anyone can do it. I wont argue too much about restaurant quality dishes, that you may like to show off, because your at a restaurant, but if you go to the same place on a frequent basis, and get the same food, I don’t want to see it every single time.

Another common update I get from friends is more personal, and I wouldn’t be one to share the information, but I get updates from friends when they talk about there poop. Facebook says “Whats on your mind?”, that is not even close to “Hey I am taking a poop, and it hurts!!” I mean come on, that is not whats on your mind, that is what your doing. This is why I prefer Facebook’s status update phrase, because it asks about the mind, not the actions. I have a friend that rants about his day often, and I have no problem with it, because that is what is on his mind. But pooping, that’s just too personal that I wouldn’t be one to say it on Facebook. One time I had a friend even take a picture of the result, and made a comment about it on Facebook, definitely not something I want to see ever again.

These are just two of the common stupid updates I see all the time on Facebook, but I have seen others. Facebook literately asks whats on your mind, so rants, bullshit, and other things that you want to discuss with friends is up to the individual, but pooping is an action, eating food is an action, making a comment on a recipe that you just made that is a thought. Know the difference, stop pissing me off, and we can all be happy.

The Perfect Parent – “My Child would never …”

How often do you hear parents claim that their child would never do something. Well in my high school years and even when I was play with friends I heard it all the time. This is one of those phrases that annoys me because it prevents me from informing, tattling, what ever floats your boat. I dont necessarily need to define that word. Although I would like to think I am an honest person, that does nothing wrong, I have been known to get into trouble, because I believe no one is perfect. When someone is doing something I believe is wrong, I normally try to inform their parents, teachers, or which ever authoritative figure is around. Most of the time I run into these parents that dont believe a single word I say, and start rattling off how good their child is, and how that child would never do such a thing. Personally I try to stay out of business, however, when I the victim of bullying, or I am involved in an incident, I know what happened, I know what I saw, at least look into the issue.

I applaud Law Enforcement for this, because they have to constantly break through these barriers and solve crimes on a daily basis. I always kept to myself, and  when I know I am not involved I am mostly honest about what  I saw. Lying was always something that my family punished me the worst about. It didn’t matter what I did at that point, if I lied, it usually was 10 times worse. If I told the truth then I would still get punished but not as severely. This resulted in having Honesty as one of my most basic principles in life. I always hated the word never, because according to the definition it is something that hasn’t happened and will not happen. This term covers both the past and the future; However when combined with the term Would, which is past tense, contradicts the meaning of never, and insinuates that it focuses on the past only, which still proves that it although it hasn’t happened, it doesn’t mean it wont. So personally if you say would never, I am just going to laugh, if you say never, I will just wait until it happens, then I am going to call you a liar.

So even though no one is perfect, which includes parents, as if they were not already people, and you combine that with the past and future parts of the definition of never, and you have a liar. Since perfect parents would result in perfect children, further resulting them never doing anything wrong, that would finally prove that you didn’t lie. Therefore, the terrible twos would not exist, and this phrase would not be so annoying because it would for once be the truth.

In the end, no one is perfect, don’t use the word never with the word would, and dont just use the word never because you would honestly never really know if you would never do something in the future. If you are a perfect parent, then feel free to use this phrase, but all I ask is prove that you have been a perfect parent, with perfect children, that have not been in trouble in the past. Share your thoughts below and have a nice day.

“Homeless People” – Happy first week of the month

Alright, I hate being the bad guy sometimes, but the first week of any month always annoys me the most. If you haven’t guessed I am going to approach this topic like I do any other topic, with definitions.

(of a person) without a home, and therefore typically living on the streets.
a homeless person; a tramp or vagrant.
noun: a vagrant
noun: a person who devotes a great deal of time to a specified activity.
verb: travel, with no particular purpose or destination.
verb: get by asking or begging.
adjective: of poor quality, bad or wrong.
noun: a person without a settled home or regular work who wanders from place to place and lives by begging.
adjective: characteristic of, relating to, or living the life of a vagrant.

Alright now that those are out of the way, lets get started on my rant. You are probably overwhelmed by the various definitions of each of the above words, but lets simplify it to this, Homeless is street living, Hobo is a homeless person, Bums are beggars, and vagrants are truly helpless people that try to do the best they can. I would like to state my point very clearly now, because my reasoning and position may seem confused as you continue reading. I am not a heartless person, but if I only see you sometimes, or you not using the little donations you do get wisely than I will not help you. I will not help the bums (beggars), but I may help the Vagrants (truly people needing help). I see the same people every single time and then use the money they are given for other reasons.

Dont get me wrong I have seen legitimate people needing help (Vagrants), we provided gas for cars, given rides to people, and even bought food for others, but the world we live in today, has wasted my families faith and so we usually do not give cash or change to anyone, because we want to know it goes to something useful. I have seen people three times in a row looking a bit rundown as if they were homeless, and I started to believe their stories, but than there are others that show up only during the first week of the month, with the same story, and those are the people I dis-test (bums). They provide interesting stories about being homeless, but since I dont see them after the first week, and then again the very next month, it makes me wonder how true that stupid story really is.

People claim to be homeless, they look like hobos, but they are more like bums, because they continuously beg for change, and sometimes dont provide a reason why they need it. They would then go inside the store they are begging at, and purchase something like beer or cigarettes, and I am sorry if you are really homeless I would be focused on food and water. Vagrants are those they I dont see often, look sincere, and honestly accept any help I can give, such as buying food for them, or putting gas in their car, so those are the people I feel sorry for. I view this as a reoccurring problem in society, because people are unwilling to try and get a job, or waste there money on useless bullshit. These “bums” are ruining our faith in society, and prevent those that truly want to help  from helping because they feel like it is fake, because most of the time it is.

These are my beliefs and although I am willing to help, I have to be convinced pretty dam hard now, please feel free to post you opinions or comments, but this is a problem in society, and it is my own opinion. Thank you for reading.

Halloween Parental Influences.

For this Halloween post I have to admit it is going to be a little opinionated however what intellectual would I be if I choose to leave out facts both supporting and opposing my claims?  Lets get several facts out of the way first.   Halloween is deeply associated with candy, horror, and mysterious folklore.  In religious belief and throughout history Halloween was originally a celebration of sorts involving spirits and or deceased loved ones.   Which of course gave way to parties and fear of the unknown.

Now some of you may have the same question I gave myself, Why is Halloween associated with fear?  Good question, I have yet to find a factual piece of evidence that supports the celebration of Halloween instilling fears into others despite it’s associates with spiritual entities.   However from what I know about the more modernized Halloween celebration,  the holiday has hit some debatable grey areas, one area of which I would like to reflect on.

We associate  the feelings of fear and terror in regards to Halloween in both the past and present times.  As a generalization it is commonly known that fear of the unknown constantly lays dormant in the back of every humans conscious and subconscious  minds.  Much of this is of course is associated with spirits, monsters, demons, angels and even common everyday life situations.  Humans fear the unknown but there are few who embrace it. Few who are drawn to it, giving birth to many learning experiences and enlightenment because once we as humans understand what it is that makes us fearful often find that there is little to fear in the aftermath.

However there are those who spend their entire lives hiding, running, even parents shielding their kids, their teenagers away from their own fears, not giving them a chance to explore, discover, analyze, and contemplate what it truly means to be afraid and what it means to overcome those obstacles through deep understanding.

This bleeds into the opinionated portion of the topic at hand, Costumes.   Now as I have said before there is nothing in the Halloween celebration that says you must dress up as something fearful however since Halloween is without a doubt associated with the feelings of fear and terror based on the unknown of the past, present, and future.  I feel as tho it’s important to dress up as something scary during Halloween night. I’m speaking from the experiences of previous Halloween celebrations and as a Walmart associate working in the Halloween seasonal isle.

I’m sick and tired of seeing little girls who want to be princesses due to their moms refusing to let their kids embrace any kind of fear or understanding during the Halloween celebration because embracing fear is just another part of a learning process….when you have dozens upon dozens of little girls who don’t want anything to do with fear and are encouraged to want to be beautiful princesses all the time then I feel as tho it’s just another way for a parent or guardian to encourage their kids to shut off their minds whenever they are scared of someone or something.

I have found this to be more apparent in girls than I do in boys as boys are usually encouraged to dress up as something mysterious and or scary which leads to a sexist undertone which pisses me off to high hell due to the fact that many girls are again encouraged to dress as something beautiful for Halloween rather then embracing a fear by dressing up as someone or something scary or frightening like boys generally are encouraged to do so by their parents during the month of October.

The Reason for Laughter – The Dictionary Loop

Alright, before I start I would like everyone to make note of my previous posts. Every time I get into a long winded theory I usually do a bit of research, and then share that research with everyone. I form my opinions around that research, and I know everyone starts attacking my opinions when I dont define them first. Those lovely attacks that usually start with That isn’t what it means, or you dont know what your talking about, well I avoid those. I provide the literal definition I find in my research, so I know my opinion is backed up with facts.

Today, I found myself laughing most of the day because a good friend of my was sharing a view comedy videos, and I dont usually watch them all at once. So after laughing most of the day away, I got to thinking about why a person laughs. I briefly talked to my friend about it, but that was not nearly as detailed as I want it to be.

The action or sound of laughing
verb: make the spontaneous sounds and movements of the face and body that are the instinctive expressions of lively amusement and sometimes also of contempt or derision.
noun: an act of laughing
Causing laughter or amusement; humorous.
Difficult to explain or understand; strange.
The state or experience of finding something funny
Causing lighthearted laughter and amusement; comic
Contemptuous ridicule or mockery

So, I have learned two things, I have too much time on my hands, and that laughter basically comes down to either something that is “strange” or something that is the result of a ridicule or mockery. So that basically means we laugh when we are confused, or we laugh at something is bad. I got this result because I had searched for six definitions, just to find the meaning of one. So lets walk through the above definitions one by one, and see just how Laughter, something that we view is a good thing, turns into something that is actually a bad thing.

I started my search with the word Laughter, thinking I should start with something that appears to be a formal word, because I was trying to find a real definition, not some slang explanation such as bro, which we all know is actually brother (search it yourself). Sadly, that is actually what I got, a slang type definition, the action or sound of laughing. I guess I need to search for Laughing next. This of course redirects me to the word Laugh because ing is a suffix, and doesn’t change the definition. I was surprised at the length of the verb definition, and might have been satisfied with this, however, I noticed the noun definition, and I about died. The same wording Laughter gave me, an act of laughing. Now I was pretty curious, and decided to see if I could delve deeper into the meaning. I decided to look up Funny, because I laugh when something is “funny”. Needless to say, that was a stupid mistake, because I got the same words, causing laughter. Here I am sitting back at the definition of Laugh, because Laughter goes to laughing, which redirects to laugh.

Then I noticed the rest of the definition, amusement, it was in both Laugh and Funny, so why not, lets look up amusement. I was eager to know the definition, thinking that amusement is a nice fancy word, that should have a decent definition, but then I saw the words “finding something funny”, this just puzzled my mind. Funny causes amusement, which is finding something funny. Looking at Funny again, I see humorous, so I figured that since its the third part of the definition, and I have yet to look it up, it might lead somewhere. Well needless to say I was wrong, the definition includes all of the words I have looked up, Laughter and amusement.

So here I am, once again, checking the definition of Laugh, which is apparently an expression of itself. Nearing the end of the verb definition, I find my last hope, contempt or derision. What the hell does the word derision mean. Turns out this word actually has a short and sweet definition, that does not go back to the word Laugh. Derision apparently means ridicule or mockery. I understood this definition, because I do laugh when someone gets made fun of, but not always. After all this research that is what it has finally dead ended, there is no further researching because I got the meaning of why we laugh. There were only two dead ends, Funny which has a second meaning of “strange”, and Derision, which has a short definition of mockery.

Debates vs. Arguments – Opening the mind

A common problem that we (those who debate) run into occasionally resolve around the people more than the actual topic. We here at lunatics landing typically can talk about any topic and not get offended by the details each one of us can provide; However, there is always one person some where in the world that assumes that our logical reasoning is an attack on their beliefs, and proceed to escalate the initiation of a debate into an argument.

Today I want to draw a clear line between a debate and an argument. I figured if I make this point, then I have more reason to delete any comment that appears to pass this line and start an argument spanning hundreds of comments. I dont mind comments that make points that are missed in the post, and hell we may edit them in, but we assume people read the full post and generally understand what we are talking about.

Noun: A formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which opposing arguments are put forward.
Verb: Argue about (a subject), esp. in a formal manner.
An exchange of diverging or opposite views, typically a heated or angry one.
A reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong.

Officially, these are the definitions we have to work with. Personally I think this really helps in drawling the line. Debates take place in a formal manner, and are not intended to offend another person, while an argument usually involves anger, and persuasion. When I debate with my friends, I don’t expect them to change there views, just merely open their minds to possibilities. Although I may bring up valid points in these debates, the idea is not to persuade you and prove that I am right. When I respond, I am constantly rethinking my position on the matter, and forming new ideas. I consider a debate successful when all parties involved have formulated a new thought on the topic, that differs from their original assumption. Each response I give consists of new considerations and new possibilities that you very well may have formed when you brought up your points on the matter.

Arguments on the other hand involve two or more parties arguing a position that doesn’t change. People who want to argue typically only want to prove their point, their position, and eventually convince you that you are just wrong. Although, with the right facts, a persons stance in an argument may very well be flawed, but not every stance is clear cut, and as long as each person can back up their position with facts, it could very well be a good debate. The argument, however, doesn’t allow the arguing party to change their views, there is always a winner and a loser, this of course causes problems, and eventually requires action to resolve, in my case deleting such comments.

In the end every argument may become a debate, if the person levels out, becomes calm, and opens their mind to the possibilities. While a debate can just as easily become an argument, if people become heated, and unwilling to see the slight possibility that they may not be 100% correct. This line can change no matter what side you start on, but the point of Lunatics Landing isn’t to cause conflict, but to vent and release bottle up tension, that may or may not be caused by such arguments. So my question to leave you all with, is whether you are willing to open your mind to infinite possibilities?
